Hazra Aya

Hello, I’m Hazra – a mentored birth and postnatal doula living in Cambridgeshire.

I grew up in East London and moved to Bristol. I worked in NHS hospitals as a dentist for over ten years  and as a university lecturer in Anatomy. I loved my role as a ‘Special Care’ dentist ; tailoring care for each person and their unique circumstance. I knew I could bring these qualities into my role as a doula. Building a relationship through trust and consistent care is what I can provide.

I trained as a breastfeeding counsellor and started up a group in Bristol to support mothers and their families. I now support through a helpline and have led antenatal breastfeeding teaching through a charity. My step into breastfeeding support led me to training as a birth and postpartum doula. 

My experiences have made me realise the healing potential there is for women, through the pregnancy, birth and postnatal journey. Previous generations were not always provided with choice; the ability to trust and listen to our own bodies has not always been encouraged.

My vision is to be part of a society which values mothering the mother, physically and emotionally. Part of my calling is to rediscover and preserve the cultural traditions of my ancestors, in ’holding’ and honouring a new mother.

I can support with cultivating faith through remembrance and trust in Allah during the journey into motherhood and beyond. As a Muslim, we do have a beautiful faith system we can draw on to gain comfort through pregnancy, build trust in Allah and prepare us for our role as mothers. 

I can support in-person in the Cambridge and surrounding areas or virtually.
